This damn song tears me up. Ben's a good ol' Arkie boy. Used to drink cheap beer with him and some of the old LR punk kids. Played shows that always got shut down by the fire marshal. Sat by the river and pined over badass girls who refused to talk to us but secretly had crushes. Then he grows up and goes and writes songs like this. If you haven't seen Lucero live, do yourself a favor.
For my Great Uncle Ralph Benavides. The kindest man I ever knew. A 19-year old Army medic who somehow survived being among the first to hit the beach at Normandy, patching up his buddies while taking fire, only to be left behind as the front moved inland to run a MASH unit for wounded German prisoners and captured by regrouping forces. Spent the remainder of the war in a church fixing up 65- and 14-year old German conscripts, being fed beer and sausages by the grateful enemy, two of whom remained close friends until his death in 1998.

I don't know if you remember this, but this is one of my most memorable Lucero nights. When I was in Alaska, y'all took a half time, and I was on this side of the stage [left]. This was just like a year ago, and these guys on the other side of the stage kept yelling for "The War." Do you remember that at all?
Yeah, there were some Army guys up there.
I don't know if you know much about Alaska, but I grew up there, and there's an Air Force base and an Army post butted up next to each other, and these guys kept yelling, "WAR". Then y'all got off the stage, and, you know, everybody wants a piece of you. I had to go to the bathroom, so I'm trying to run, and everyone was just gridlocked between the bar and the stage. They were telling you how much Lucero's music got them "through so much shit overseas," and just… I was trying not to cry. I was looking at the floor, and I was trying not to listen, but they were not moving. You said, "I gotta buy you guys a shot. Come on!" And I thought that was just the classiest stuff I've seen in a long time.
Just buying them shots?
Out of a rock band. You actually listened and were interested in what they had to say. You weren't just like, "Oh. Okay. Well, cool. Later."
No. And that's a big compliment, too. Just since we do have a few songs about my granddad, and I guess war in general and the army. I get a lot of guys that come up, and, yeah, just the fact that, I don't know. It's a big compliment, being a part of their experience over there. Being a positive part of that experience. That's serious stuff. You gotta pay attention, and say "thank you," because that matters.

I love the new "full band" they're touring with now, but most of my memories of them was as a filthy 4-piece. I haven't seen them in years. Gotta do something about that.

This was one of the first songs they wrote as a band. Saw them play it live for the first time at Vino's in Little Rock.
